Res­i­dents torch lorry after ac­ci­dent, protest­ing il­le­gal sand har­vest­ing

A lorry be­long­ing to il­le­gal sand har­vesters was on Sun­day torched by an­gry res­i­dents at Kwa-Mulu vil­lage, Nzaui sub­county, in Makueni.

Nzaui po­lice boss Alex Ndung’u said the lorry was burnt by the res­i­dents after the driver hit a county gov­ern­ment ve­hi­cle in­jur­ing the driver and a pas­sen­ger.

“The lorry was in­ter­cepted by county askaris. It was fer­ry­ing sand from Muooni River then the driver hit the ve­hi­cle on the driver’s side in­jur­ing him and a pas­sen­ger,” Ndung’u said.

Dur­ing the morn­ing con­fronta­tion, two loaders who were armed with bows and ar­rows were ar­rested.The in­jured were treated at the Sul­tan Ha­mud Sub­county Hos­pi­tal and dis­charged.
