Rain, roadworks cause 15-hour jam on Nairobi highway
Hundreds of travellers spent more than 15 hours in a traffic jam at Miasenyi-Taru on the Mombasa-Nairobi highway on Sunday evening, following heavy rains.
Long-distance trucks got stuck in the mud along a 10km diversion under construction, resulting in the gridlock that was only cleared on Monday evening.
“I have been stuck at this particular spot for more than 10 hours. We do not have water and food and we don’t know at what time the traffic will ease,” truck driver Hassan Nurr said on Monday.
He blamed the road contractor for taking too long to finish the work on the Miasenyi-Bachuma-Taru stretch.
Voi police boss Joshua Litukai said some drivers started overlapping, making the situation worse.
