Space Bar loses bid to quash order blocking permit

The High Court has refused to quash a decision by the Liquor Licensing Board to revoke the business permit of the Space Bar Lounge.

Justice George Odunga directed the Nairobi City County and Liquor Licensing Board to file their response ahead of the hearing on November 28. Through lawyer Samuel Akolo, director John Gotonga said he was dismayed to see on social media a notice from the County Liquor Board rejecting his application for a liquor licence and ordering him to stop operations. The reason given was that his business had not complied with the noise-level directives.

Gitonga said he carried out soundproofing at the premises and received approval from the National Environment Management Authority. He said Nairobi county has never notified him of any defects in the soundproofing work. Gitonga said any mistakes should not call for business closure.
