Sand har­vest­ing en­dan­gers rivers, roads and health

Ex­ces­sive and il­le­gal sand har­vest­ing in e ru­ral ar­eas in pur­suit of quick riches is ex­pos­ing Kenyans to an en­vi­ron­men­tal disas­ter. The youths are work­ing against the gov­ern­ment ef­forts to pre­serve wa­ter in rivers and to con­serve the en­vi­ron­ment. Sand helps hold wa­ter in rivers and dams for a longer time. This wa­ter has var­i­ous uses, in­clud­ing fur­ther pro­tect­ing the en­vi­ron­ment. The over­loaded lor­ries are also de­stroy­ing roads in ru­ral ar­eas. Sand har­vest­ing pol­lutes wa­ter. This is why ev­ery ef­fort must be taken to pro­tect our rivers from il­le­gal sand har­vesters.
