A day-old baby girl was rescued yesterday from a pit latrine by police and firefighters at Kamirithu Polytechnic in Limuru, Kiambu county.

A second-year student who was bleeding was rushed to hospital with the baby for maternity DNA testing.

Principal Gichanga Njuguna said, “Female students reported to our officers [at 7am] that there were blood stains on the floor of a latrine and they had heard a baby crying. We all rushed to confirm.”

The fire brigade arrived shortly after, demolished the 30-foot latrine and rescued the baby.

County Education chief officer Anne Gichohi said, “The baby has been cleaned and we have been informed that she and her mother are in stable condition.”
