Kisii 10-storey killer build­ing owner and en­gi­neer charged with man­slaugh­ter

The owner of the build­ing that col­lapsed in Kisii last week killing eight peo­ple, and the en­gi­neer su­per­vis­ing con­struc­tion, were yes­ter­day charged with man­slaugh­ter.

Owner Jeremiah Ma­toke and Jeff Ocharo faced eight counts of man­slaugh­ter for the No­vem­ber 10 dis­as­ter.

Ma­toke, also faced a sep­a­rate count of em­ploy­ing an un­reg­is­tered struc­tural en­gi­neer to su­per­vise con­struc­tion. Ma­toke, rep­re­sented by Nyaberi Nyakundi, and Ocharo by Oguttu Mboya de­nied all the charges be­fore chief mag­is­trate Jesse Nyaga.

The duo was re­leased on Sh2 mil­lion bond and surety of a sim­i­lar amount. They were given the op­tion of pay­ing cash bail of Sh 500, 000 each.

The case will be men­tioned on De­cem­ber 1.
