Butere cattle thief killed, cross-border theft on the rise
A man from Eshinamwenyuli village in Butere town was on Wednesday lynched by residents for suspected cattle theft.
He was found with three head of cattle. Deputy county commissioner Jack Obuo said cases of cattle theft have been on the rise in the last month. “We are worried by the cross-border theft of cattle by gangs from the neighbouring Ugunja and Mumias subcounties. There have been cases of three to four cattle thefts in a week,” he said.
The suspected cattle thief is yet to be identified. Obuo said his office will partner with community leaders to improve security during the festive season. “We have put stringent measures to curb theft. Farmers suffer. They take care of animals only for them to be stolen.”
