Butere cat­tle thief killed, cross-border theft on the rise

A man from Eshi­namwenyuli vil­lage in Butere town was on Wednes­day lynched by res­i­dents for sus­pected cat­tle theft.

He was found with three head of cat­tle. Deputy county com­mis­sioner Jack Obuo said cases of cat­tle theft have been on the rise in the last month. “We are wor­ried by the cross-border theft of cat­tle by gangs from the neigh­bour­ing Ugunja and Mu­mias sub­coun­ties. There have been cases of three to four cat­tle thefts in a week,” he said.

The sus­pected cat­tle thief is yet to be iden­ti­fied. Obuo said his of­fice will part­ner with com­mu­nity lead­ers to im­prove security dur­ing the fes­tive sea­son. “We have put strin­gent mea­sures to curb theft. Farm­ers suf­fer. They take care of an­i­mals only for them to be stolen.”
