IEBC should not conduct primaries, as it handles nomination disputes – Nyong’o

The Star (Kenya) - - Politics -

The electoral agency should not conduct party primaries, Kisumu Senator Anyang’ Nyong’o has said. In the past, the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission acted as a tribunal that heard disputes arising from party nominations. Who will take up that role if the IEBC runs nominations? he asked. “We can’t allow the IEBC to do our primaries because it’s the body that should be appealed to in the event something goes wrong,” Nyong’o said. The senator said the IEBC should stick to conducting national elections. Political parties should conduct their primaries and seek redress at the electoral agency in case of disputes, Nyong’o said. He spoke to the press at Akado centre in Seme after a forum with residents. The senator said, however, that it is not wrong for the IEBC to conduct party primaries using public money as it is entrenched in law.
