Cops seek longer remand of widow of tortured principal, witness tampering feared

Lawyer says prosecution has not given compelling reasons to keep her and she has a right to bond. She was earlier remanded for seven days

Police want to hold the widow of murdered Kiru Boys Secondary School principal Solomon Mwangi for 14 more days so they can complete investigations.

Murang’a principal magistrate Anthony Mwicigi will rule on the application today.

Yesterday a CID investigator said Jane Muthoni is not the only suspect and they are investigating others still at large.

Police also expressed fear that if Muthoni is released, she will interfere with investigations.

The investigations are still in early stages and vital statements have not yet been recorded.

The same court had allowed the prosecution to remand her for seven days last Monday.

The prosecution said it intends to record statements from members of staff of Ichachiri Girls Secondary School, where Muthoni is a principal.

“We are yet to record statements of some members of staff where she is the principal and she will definitely interfere if released,” Clement Mwangi, a homicide expert from the CID headquarters, said.

“These other suspects must be arrested and our operations may be jeopardised if the suspect is released,” the police officer said.

Mwangi said even though the suspect’s rights are important, it is vital to ensure justice for her husband who was bound, tortured and strangled.

Muthoni’s lawyer Bernard Muriuki accused the police of being slow in their investigations.

He said Muthoni has a right to be released on bond and the grounds presented by the prosecution are not compelling enough to warrant them to hold her longer.

Muriuki said the suspect should be allowed time to participate in her husband’s burial and take care of her four children.

Muthoni was arrested on November 13 after police recovered her husband’s badly mutilated body dumped in a coffee estate at Witeithie in Juja, Kiambu county. He disappeared on November 5.

Police also impounded a salon car suspected to have been used in the murder.

It is said to have been driven by Muthoni days before Mwangi was killed.

Police are investigating extra-marital liaisons involving both Mwangi and Muthoni.
