MCAs angered over Sh59m not accounted for
Elgeyo Marakwet MCAs have criticised the executive for failure to account for and appropriately spend county funds. Led by the assembly’s Finance Committee chairman Vincent Keitany on Tuesday, they said Governor Alex Tolgos’ administration has been reluctant to execute projects within stipulated time periods. Keitany told the press at the assembly that the county did not use Sh600 million in 2015-16, and the funds were returned to Treasury. This despite the county being among those that receive the least amount of cash from the national government. “It was our hope as the county assembly that all the funds received would be used for development,” he said. He asked the county executive to provide documents to clear the accountability queries raised in the Auditor General’s report. The report says Elgeyo Marakwet failed to account for more than Sh59 million. The county government could not account for mortgage loans given to county executives, funds used for translocation of wildlife to Rimoi Game Reserve and payment to county staff who supervised sports projects, it says.
