Sa­monye, Chechichir set to de­fend crowns

elle/ De­fend­ing cham­pi­ons Robert Sa­monye (men) and Re­becca Chep­chirchir (women) are ex­pected to de­fend their ti­tles dur­ing this year’s World Aids Day Marathon in Kisumu to­mor­row.

Sa­monye will be up against Ben­son Nak­eri, El­phas Kiprop, Mark Luk­wamoi, Bernard Bor and Ed­ward Kirwa in the men’s race while Chep­chirchir will face Sally Chep­keter, Ed­nah Kimu­tai, Dianah Che­p­rono in the women’s cat­e­gory.

Athletics Kenya (AK) Nyanza North pub­lic re­la­tions of­fi­cer, Jared Gilo said they ex­pect a num­ber of for­eign run­ners take part in the race. “We have nine Amer­i­cans com­ing to par­tic­i­pate in the race led by the co-spon­sor of the race Richard Brod­sky and his wife, who have fea­tured in the event since in­cep­tion since in­cep­tion to take part in this race,” he added.

Gilo also said apart from the Amer­i­cans, they also ex­pect run­ners from neigh­bour­ing Uganda and Tan­za­nia to take part.
