Namanga assistant county commissioner Alex Nakamet is on the run after he was charged with demanding and receiving a bribe from members of a group who had sought his assistance.
A warrant of arrest was issued against him after he failed to appear in court to face corruption and abuse of office charges. He is charged on four counts of corruptly soliciting and receiving a benefit from Ntuyota Marasua.
Nakamet was arrested by the EACC detectives on November 1, in his office. He allegedly received Sh50,000 as part of the Sh100,000 he had demanded from members of Mailua Group Ranch to assist them resolve a dispute between rival camps. The group ranch members reported the matter to the EACC’s Lower Eastern regional office, who set up a sting operation during in which Nakamet was given treated money and arrested in his office. The money he received was recovered from his drawer.
It is suspected he might have crossed the border into Tanzania to avoid arrest.
