Kenyan picked to lead geo­ther­mal group

Phyl­lis Ma­thenge, a drilling en­gi­neer with the Geo­ther­mal De­vel­op­ment Com­pany, has been ap­pointed as the first in­terim pres­i­dent of an or­gan­i­sa­tion that brings to­gether women who work in geo­ther­mal firms. The or­gan­i­sa­tion, Women in Geo­ther­mal in Africa, is an af­fil­i­ate of Wing Global based in the US. It is a non-profit as­so­ci­a­tion that ad­vo­cates the strength­en­ing of women’s voice, di­ver­sity and in­clu­sive­ness in the geo­ther­mal in­dus­try. Wing Africa was launched last month dur­ing the sixth Africa Rift Geo­ther­mal Con­fer­ence in Ad­dis Ababa, Ethiopia, and has mem­ber­ship from 13 coun­tries. It ad­mits women, as well as men, who sup­port the growth of women in the geo­ther­mal in­dus­try. GDC man­ag­ing di­rec­tor and CEO Eng John­son ole Nchoe hosted a lun­cheon in hon­our of Ma­thenge. “At Wing Africa, we will share knowl­edge, men­tor one an­other and grow to­gether,” Ma­thenge said. “We want to dare into the board­rooms to­gether. We hope to cre­ate a bal­ance in the work­place.”
