Justice Mwilu, known by her colleagues as a respectful judge who treats both junior and senior staff equally, served as a High Court judge before her appointment as Deputy Chief Justice.

The soft-spoken judge is assertive and not easily swayed according to those who know her. As a sign of respect by colleagues and their trust in her abilities, she was in May this year elected to represent the Supreme Court at the Judicial Service Commission. She graduated from the University of Nairobi and was admitted as an advocate of the High Court of Kenya in 1984. She has practiced law at Muthoga Gaturu & Company and later Mutunga & Company Advocates. She has worked as company secretary in a state corporation before being appointed as a judge of the High Court in 2007. She has served in the commercial division in Nairobi, the Eldoret High Court and the Civil Appeals subdivision of the High Court, the murder section of the criminal division and the Environment and Land Division of the High Court.
