JUS­TICE JACKTON OJWANG

A no-non­sense judge and a bril­liant le­gal mind is what Jus­tice Ojwang is de­scribed as.

He was born in 1950 in Mig­ori county. Ojwang be­came the first sit­ting Kenyan judge to re­ceive a Doc­tor of Laws de­gree. He joined the Ju­di­ciary in 2003, serv­ing as a High Court judge in Nairobi and Mom­basa un­til 2011. Ojwang was ad­mit­ted as an ad­vo­cate of the High Court of Kenya in Septem­ber 1983.

His pro­fes­sional ca­reer be­gan at the University of Nairobi School of Law, where he lec­tured from 1976 to 1983.

From 1983 to 1987, he served as a se­nior lec­turer at the University Of Nairobi School of Law and also as an Ad­vo­cate of the High Court of Kenya. He then went ahead to be­come a full pro­fes­sor of law and from 1987 to 1990 be­com­ing an as­so­ciate pro­fes­sor at the University Of Nairobi School Of Law.

In 1990, Jus­tice Ojwang be­came the dean of law at the University of Nairobi School of Law, where he held that po­si­tion from 1990 to 2003. Ojwang was ap­pointed as an As­so­ciate Jus­tice to the in­au­gu­ral Supreme Court on June 11, 2011.
