Kaist re­search team de­vel­ops new nano-print­ing tech­nol­ogy

A Korean re­search team has de­vel­oped the world’s first nano-print­ing tech­nol­ogy that can print a set of al­mostin­vis­i­ble lay­ers and trans­plant them onto any flex­i­ble or curved ob­jects, in­clud­ing hu­man skin.

The nano struc­ture con­sists of thin lay­ers of mi­cro­elec­tronic ma­te­ri­als sized at just 10 nanome­ters, which is as thin as one-ten thou­sandth of a hu­man hair strand. Jung Yeon-sik, as­so­ciate pro­fes­sor of ma­te­ri­als sci­ence at Korea Ad­vanced In­sti­tute of Sci­ence and Tech­nol­ogy (Kaist), the project’s re­search leader, ex­plained that this tech­nol­ogy will con­trib­ute to the mass pro­duc­tion of elec­tronic sen­sors and dis­plays be­cause it can sig­nif­i­cantly re­duce print­ing costs.

Jung said the tech­nol­ogy can be com­mer­cial­ized in chip and sen­sor fac­to­ries within next three years. He added that the tech­nol­ogy has a promis­ing fu­ture as the flex­i­ble and wear­able mo­bile de­vice mar­kets are es­ti­mated to con­tinue grow­ing.
