Asian Game: Sepaktakraw (Chinlone) Matches
SEPAKTAKRAW (CHINLONE) MATCHES
At the 17th Incheon Asian Games, the Sepaktawkraw Men’s Regu Final between Thailand and South Korea was held in the Bucheon Gymnasium on October 3, 2014. At the end of the match, the winners were Thailand for gold, South Korea for silver, and Myanmar and Malaysia for the bronze medals, respectively.
According to South Korean coach, Koreans started playing Sepaktawkraw in1988. They started playing professionally ten years ago. This is the 5th generation of players. Moreover, they used to hire Thai coaches, and trained in Thailand. The South Korean team has the best Sepaktawkraw players outside its origin, the Southeast Asian region.
For the Thai team, their coach felt their team got pressure from spectators. According to the Malaysian coach, their team did better than the previous game in China. However, he is not satisfied with the number of games. With just two games, it is much less, he complained. The Malaysians also hope that Sepaktawkraw could be an Olympic game.
According to Myanmar’s coach, their team’s performance was the same as the 2010 in China. This time, they had four new players, and they were a mix of older and younger players. They are also prepared for the 2015 SEA Games. Sepaktakraw is known as Chinlone in Myanmar. It is one of Myanmar’s traditional sports. Nowadays, it is becoming more popular in Asia. Many people who watch the games are becoming more enthusiastic with the sport. Surely someday, it will become a worldwide sport. Similarly, the Sepaktawkraw Women’s Regu Final between Thailand and South Korea was held. The winners were Thailand for gold, South Korea for silver, and China and Indonesia tied for the bronze medals. At the Sepaktakraw women’s team preliminary, the group B competition between Myanmar and India was held at the Bucheon Gymnasium on September 23, 2014. There were three teams from each country for the competition of Regu1, Regu2 and Regu3. All three of Myanmar’s women’s teams won the match against India. Number 5 Kay Zin Htut from Myanmar was an excellent player. She could hit the target without missing a single time. Number 3 Kyu Kyu Thin from Myanmar is also excellent Tekong. She scored many times by just a good serving cane ball. Myanmar’s score continued to increase and they won the game quickly by the 2nd match. They left the Indian team with less than five points out of 21. Myanmar’s women’s team won a gold medal for the women double match.
At the press conference, the Thai coach expressed that his team worked hard, and that they deserved to win the gold medal. However, he did not say that the Thai team will
always get the gold medal. “How long we will retain the gold, I don’t know,” he said. Again, the Thai authority will ask the Olympic Committee to include Sepaktakaraw in Olympic game.
The Korean coach had confessed that they had found a weak point in their team, so they will try to do better next time. The Korean team also participated in the international match in Phuket, Thailand, and elsewhere. Although the Korean government did not support them very much, they hope they will get better support in the future. Koreans believe Sepaktakraw is an international sport and famous among many games. They definitely hope many people will take interest in this sport. The Korean women’s team leader described how she started Sepaktakraw. When she was in high school, she said that she was enthusiastically interested in it. She suggests that this sport should have a live broadcast. Indonesian coaches said that they were proud to get bronze medal, and that they will try to do better next time. The Indonesian team also participated in the Asian Beach Games in Phuket. In Indonesia, parents usually prohibited their daughters to go for sports training center in many provinces. So they suggest it will be a good to start at the school to encourage Sepaktakraw.
The Chinese coach said their team is doing better and there will be more support for the Sepaktakraw team in their country. The Chinese team also went to the Asian Beach Games. In China, teenagers do not participate very much in Sepaktakraw. They can only see matches in special occasions, or in some school events. The coach believed that the Asian Games made people more interested in Sepaktawkraw around China. It is significantly growing in schools around China.
