U.S. Pres­i­dent Don­ald Trump plans to nom­i­nate Vic­tor Cha, a Korean-Amer­i­can ex­pert on North Korea, as the U.S. am­bas­sador to South Korea, ac­cord­ing to Reuters.

Cit­ing a gov­ern­ment of­fi­cial, the news agency re­ported Tues­day that Cha’s ap­point­ment will be an­nounced soon. If ap­pointed, he will be sub­ject to a Se­nate con­fir­ma­tion hear­ing.

If suc­cess­ful, he will re­place Mark Lip­pert, who quit in Jan­uary af­ter Trump took of­fice. Marc Knap­per has been serv­ing as the act­ing am­bas­sador.

A scholar, au­thor and for­mer for­eign pol­icy ad­viser to Ge­orge W. Bush, Cha is gen­er­ally seen as an ad­vo­cate of a hawk­ish ap­proach on North Korea.

He cur­rently works at the Cen­ter for Strate­gic and In­ter­na­tional Stud­ies af­ter join­ing it in 2009 as a se­nior ad­viser and in­au­gu­ral Korea Chair.

He is also the di­rec­tor of Asian stud­ies at Ge­orge­town Univer­sity’s Depart­ment of Gov­ern­ment and School of For­eign Ser­vice.

From 2004 to 2007, he was the di­rec­tor for Asian af­fairs at the White House on the Na­tional Se­cu­rity Coun­cil (NSC) un­der the Ge­orge W. Bush ad­min­is­tra­tion, dur­ing which time he re­ceived two Out­stand­ing Ser­vice Com­men­da­tions.

Cha was mainly re­spon­si­ble for af­fairs in the two Koreas, Ja­pan, Aus­tralia, New Zealand and Pa­cific Is­land na­tions.

He was also U.S. deputy head of del­e­ga­tion dur­ing the six-party talks in Beijing.

Cha won mul­ti­ple awards with his books, in­clud­ing “Align­ment De­spite An­tag­o­nism: The United States-Korea-Ja­pan Se­cu­rity Tri­an­gle” (1999), “Be­yond the Fi­nal Score: The Pol­i­tics of Sport in Asia” (2009) and “The Im­pos­si­ble State: North Korea, Past and Future” (2012).

He earned a bach­e­lor’s de­gree, a master’s of in­ter­na­tional af­fairs de­gree and a Ph.D. from Columbia Univer­sity.

He also holds a master’s de­gree from Ox­ford Univer­sity.

Cha was a for­mer John M. Olin Na­tional Se­cu­rity Fel­low at Har­vard Univer­sity and a two-time Ful­bright Scholar.
