KUWAIT CITY, Oct 24: The Misdemeanor Court upheld verdict issued by the Court of First Instance and acquitted a citizen and his wife of abusing and beating a police officer in the course of his duty.

The couple is said to have humiliated the victim who is a public employee by hurling insults on him, while the citizen allegedly assaulted him.

In their defense, Lawyer Ali Matar Al-Wawan requested dismissal of the appeal filed by Public Prosecution and upheld the verdict of First Instance Court, affirming that criminal code stipulates the initial ruling should be upheld if nothing new is presented while appealing judgment.

Producer held:

Public Prosecutor Derar Al-Asousi has ordered the detention of Kuwaiti film producer Adel Al-Musallam and his Iraqi partner in the Central Prison for 21 days on accusations of money laundering, and exporting and peddling in intoxicants.

Officers from the Ministry of Interior arrested Al-Musallam for smuggling and trading in narcotics, and using his production company as a cover for his illegitimate activities after turning his office located inside a shopping mall into a laboratory for mass production of illicit substances.

An Interior Ministry statement indicated Al-Musallam was exporting raw materials required in the manufacture of drugs by taking advantage of law — as it does not prohibit export of such raw materials, and manufactured intoxicants from with the help of his Iraqi partner.

It is worthy of note that Al-Musallam’s wealth multiplied within a short period to over KD 10 million and he justified his affluence through his trade with Western Europe.

Verdict annulled:

The Personal Status Division of the Court of Appeals nullified the verdict issued by the Court of First Instance, which ordered a Kuwaiti man to pay his exwife KD 320 to cover monthly expenses, accommodation and housemaid expenses, in addition to KD 400 for the recruitment of the housemaid. The court dismissed the case because the divorce of the couple was carried out in the right manner.

Details of the appeal filed by Lawyer Mohammad Seyyid Al-Husseini indicated that the couple concluded procedures of divorce before the previous verdict was issued. This means that the woman was not entitled to those benefits from her ex-husband, especially since the waiting period had been completed. The lawyer was able to prove that the woman went for overseas medical treatment on her ex-husband’s expense, based on the health insurance of the man’s office, contrary to her claim that she was responsible for the expenses.
