European Parliament warns of tourism sector’s collapse
BRUSSELS, Sept 23, (KUNA): The tourism sector, that employs 22 million people in Europe, is on the verge of collapse due to the coronvirus pandemic, the European Parliament’s Transport and Tourism Committee warned Wednesday.
The warning was issued after a meeting of the Committee in Brussels today with European travel and tourism stakeholders to take stock of the dire situation facing the tourism sector and to discuss ways to overcome this unprecedented crisis.
“This is no small threat: depending on the country, tourism accounts from 4.3 percent to 25 percent of the GDP. As things stand, hundreds of thousands of SMEs will not survive until the end of this year,” said the participants in a joint statement after the meeting.
