KUWAIT: President of the Arab Inter-Parliamentary Union (AIPU) and the National Assembly Speaker Marzouq Ali Al-Ghanem lauded talks he held late on Monday with UAE officials during his brief visit to the GCC country.

In a press statement, Ghanem said that his discussions with the UAE Vice-President, Prime Minister, and Ruler of Dubai Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al-Maktoum and Abu Dhabi Crown Prince and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, Mohammed bin Zayed AlNahyan, were constructive and fruitful.

“As head of the Arab parliament, I declare that my discussions with Sheikh Mohammad bin Rashid Al-Maktoumm and Sheikh Mohammad bin Zayed Al-Nahyan focused on urgent regional files especially the situation in the occupied Palestine,” said Ghanem, affirming that it was important for Arabs to unite in an effort to halt the Israeli aggression and mistreatment of Palestinians. He said that “discussions also touched on developments in Yemen, Iraq, and Syria in addition to issues related to the ongoing acts of terrorism requiring a firm regional and international stance.”

Ghanem called on the GCC states to cooperate within the counter-terrorism domain, adding that he had received the UAE’s views regarding the matter during his meeting with the Emirates top officials. He thanked the UAE officials for their support for the Arab parliamentary union and commended at the same time the role played by the UAE within the GCC and Arab legislative spheres.

Ghanem concluded his statement by saying that the talks with the UAE officials had reflected the long standing relations linking the two brotherly countries “which will hopefully continue to develop ever more.”

Historic ties

Meanwhile, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid affirmed Abu Dhabi’s Keenness on cementing the brotherly and historic ties with the State of Kuwait. The Vice President made the affirmation during his hosting of Ghanem at Qasr Al Bahar (the Sea Palace), the official UAE news agency, WAM, reported yesterday.

Sheikh Mohammed stressed on the UAE resolution on boosting the deep-rooted ties with Kuwait, describing the bilateral relations as distinguished at the political, economic and social levels. He asked the Kuwait Parliament Speaker to convey his greetings to His Highness the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, wishing him everlasting health and wellness. He also wished the Kuwaiti people further progress and prosperity. Both sides discussed bilateral ties and means to enhance them at all levels to best serve the interests of both countries, besides the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC).

They also tackled latest developments on the Arab and regional arenas and means of boosting Arab unity and solidarity, besides the role of the Arab parliamentarians in achieving the ultimate aspirations of the Arab states and peoples.

Strong relations

In the meantime, Speaker of the UAE National Council Mohammad Al-Murr praised the strong and brotherly relations between the UAE and the State of Kuwait at all levels. Murr lauded Ghanem for his efforts in strengthening bilateral relations between the two countries, especially the parliamentary ties.

“The youthful energy manifested by Ghanem and the efforts on part of the State of Kuwait in promoting Gulf and Arab relations call for respect and appreciation,” Murr added.

The distinguished parliamentary relations between the two countries is an extension of the strong political bonds between the United Arab Emirates and Kuwait, under the wise leadership of His Highness the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah and his brother, the UAE President Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, he stressed. The ties between Kuwait National Assembly and UAE National Council is an ideal relationship and one of the best relationships between legislative assemblies at the Gulf and Arab levels, he said.
