GCC adopts tourism vi­sion

RIYADH: Kuwait’s Min­is­ter of In­for­ma­tion and Min­is­ter of State for Youth Af­fairs Sheikh Sal­man Sabah Salem Al-Hu­moud Al-Sabah said yes­ter­day that the meet­ing of the GCC tourism min­is­ters had adopted a sin­gle strate­gic vi­sion for joint tourism co­op­er­a­tion. Speak­ing to KUNA and TV fol­low­ing the meet­ing, he said an ex­ec­u­tive team would be set up to put this vi­sion in place within one month’s time, quot­ing the con­fer­ees as un­der­scor­ing the sig­nif­i­cance of re­ac­ti­vat­ing the tourism sec­tor in the re­gion thanks to its role in the pro­mo­tion of Gulf iden­tity.

He added that the meet­ing had de­cided a set of weighty res­o­lu­tions chiefly aim­ing at con­sol­i­dat­ing Gulf tourism co­op­er­a­tion through a sin­gle vi­sion for cul­ture and tourism in the GCC mem­ber states. The Kuwaiti min­is­ter, highly ap­pre­ci­ated Saudi King Sal­man bin Ab­du­laziz’s in­ter­est in and keen­ness on re­vamp­ing the sec­tor of tourism and cul­ture in the Gulf re­gion. He also called for fur­ther strength­en­ing and ce­ment­ing co­or­di­na­tion and co­op­er­a­tion among the GCC coun­tries as a key tool for safe­guard­ing re­gional se­cu­rity and sta­bil­ity and main­tain­ing Gulf gains and as­sets.

Mean­while, Sheikh Sal­man Al-Sabah em­pha­sized that it is im­per­a­tive for the GCC coun­tries to re­ac­ti­vate the role of na­tional her­itage in deep­en­ing Gulf na­tional iden­tity and con­sol­i­dat­ing bonds among the Gulf peo­ple. Speak­ing to KUNA and TV af­ter tour­ing the Hand­i­craft Ex­hi­bi­tion and Na­tional Mu­seum at King Ab­du­laziz His­tor­i­cal Cen­ter in Riyadh, the min­is­ter said the ex­hi­bi­tion shows a set of hand­i­crafts that are meant to pro­mote Gulf iden­tity and be­long­ing and to link be­tween past and present. In this con­text, the min­is­ter un­der­lined the GCC coun­tries’ in­ter­est in en­cour­ag­ing and spurring hand­i­crafts in the field of tourism and cul­ture in the re­gion. — KUNA
