Cahill won­der goal for City on A-League de­but

Vet­eran Soc­ceroo Tim Cahill launched his home­com­ing to Aus­tralia’s A-League with a spec­tac­u­lar long-range goal in Mel­bourne City’s thump­ing 4-1 derby win over Mel­bourne Vic­tory yes­ter­day. The 36-year-old well-trav­elled in­ter­na­tional hit a siz­zling 35me­tre vol­ley that sailed over goal­keeper Lawrence Thomas into the top right-hand cor­ner to open the scor­ing. Cahill, who has scored a record 48 in­ter­na­tional goals for his coun­try, was play­ing for the first time in the A-League af­ter a stel­lar 18-year stint over­seas. Uruguayan Bruno Fornaroli, Luke Brat­tan and Ar­gen­tine Fer­nando Bran­dan rounded off the scor­ing for Mel­bourne City, who are owned by Abu Dhabi-based City Foot­ball Group and coached by Dutch­man John van’t Schip. Marco Ro­jas, who flew back af­ter play­ing for New Zealand in the United States in mid-week, scored Vic­tory’s only goal. Mel­bourne City re­main un­beaten along with Syd­ney FC af­ter the open­ing two rounds of the A-League.
