Kuwait Times - - FROM THE ARABIC PRESS -

Zain, the leading telecommunications company in Kuwait, announced the launch of an official online donation portal for its humanitarian initiative #ZainWithRefugees, which comes as part of the company’s strategic partnership with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) with the aim of supporting refugees in the region during the harsh winter season.

#ZainWithRefugees comes as an extension of the recent signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between Zain and the UNHCR during April at the UN House. The agreement considers the best ways in which to contribute to the improvement of the living and social conditions of refugees and any other individuals who the UNHCR provides assistance to, and is considered an embodiment of the spirit of cooperation between private and humanitarian sectors.

Zain launched the official online donation portal to offer the public an opportunity to donate to its humanitarian campaign #ZainWithRefugees in collaboration with the UNHCR. The campaign aims at improving the living conditions of thousands of refugees in the region who suffer from the lack of essential supplies during the harsh winter season. Donations will be utilized to provide families with financial support, winter clothing, thermal blankets, heaters, and more.

Zain prides itself in its long list of joint collaborations with the UNHCR, including the extension of mobile telecommunications coverage to reconnect displaced families in the Middle East, offering telecom services in deprived areas, as well as awareness campaigns through SMS services and social media channels. The agreement between Zain and the UNHCR also focuses on the importance of raising awareness of the plight of refugees, and shedding light on the humanitarian initiatives in place to alleviate the suffering of this community of people around the world, as well as highlight the efforts of the State of Kuwait in creating a hub for humanitarian work under the umbrella of the wise leadership of His Highness the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al Ahmad Al Jaber Al Sabah.

The UNHCR was established on 4 December 1950, by the United Nations General Assembly in the aftermath of World War 2. The mandate of the Commission was to lead and coordinate international action to protect refugees and resolve refugee problems worldwide, as the Commission seeks to ensure people are able to exercise their right to seek asylum and find safe refuge in another state. The UNHCR is charged with overseeing the provision of protection, shelter, health care, education and other basic needs to refugees, in addition to supporting the communities hosting them.

The relationship between the UNHCR and the State of Kuwait has witnessed a long history of cooperation. There have always been bridges extending between the Commission and the State of Kuwait, its Amir, government, people and institutions. UNHCR enjoys good and productive relations with all stakeholders within the State of Kuwait, which made its task easier to deliver the contributions of the State of Kuwait to refugees, internally displaced persons and victims of disasters.

Within Kuwait, the UNHCR works closely with the government in addition to local partners, such as the International Islamic Charitable Organization, the Kuwait Red Crescent Society, and the Zakat House, the Society of the Ideal Family.
