Con­trac­tor ques­tioned over un­safe build­ing de­mo­li­tion

KUWAIT: A con­trac­tor is be­ing sum­moned for ques­tion­ing over charges of fail­ure to se­cure safety con­di­tions at a site where an apart­ment build­ing was de­mol­ished in Hawally Thurs­day af­ter­noon. Footage went vi­ral on so­cial media show­ing a build­ing be­ing de­mol­ished with lit­tle safety mea­sures taken around it, while peo­ple were run­ning away for shel­ter. Some ve­hi­cle own­ers even re­ported that their ve­hi­cles parked near the lo­ca­tion were dam­aged by the de­mo­li­tion works. Af­ter see­ing the video footage, Kuwait Mu­nic­i­pal­ity launched in­ves­ti­ga­tions and filed a case at the near­est po­lice sta­tion, which was then re­ferred to the Pub­lic Prose­cu­tion for fur­ther ac­tion, the mu­nic­i­pal­ity said in a state­ment. The con­trac­tor faces a pun­ish­ment of up to 7 years in jail and pay­ing an up to KD 10,000 fine if found guilty of mal­prac­tice.

Smoke in­hala­tion

A man died from smoke in­hala­tion he suf­fered in a fire at his fifth-floor apart­ment in Mah­boulah re­cently. The vic­tim, African, was found in a crit­i­cal con­di­tion by fire­fight­ers, who handed him over to paramedics. He was rushed to the hos­pi­tal but died on ar­rival, Kuwait Fire Ser­vices Direc­torate said in a state­ment. A case was filed to in­ves­ti­gate the causes of the fire.

KUWAIT: Kuwait Fire Ser­vices Direc­torate (KFSD) car­ried out a fire drill re­cently at a build­ing un­der con­struc­tion in Kuwait City, dur­ing which the newly-ac­quired com­pressed air foam sys­tem (CAFS) was used, and was able to pump wa­ter and foam 400 me­ters up­wards within 52 sec­onds.
