US, EU praise Kuwait’s elec­tions

WASHINGTON/BRUS­SELS: The US on Mon­day con­grat­u­lated Kuwait on the suc­cess of its Na­tional Assem­bly elec­tions, de­scrib­ing the Gulf na­tion as a “re­gional leader”in con­sti­tu­tional gov­er­nance.“We con­grat­u­late Kuwait and its peo­ple on a suc­cess­ful hold­ing of a na­tional par­lia­men­tary elec­tion,”State De­part­ment spokesman John Kirby said at a brief­ing. “Kuwait has long been a re­gional leader with re­spect to con­sti­tu­tional gov­er­nance as re­flected by Satur­day’s free leg­isla­tive elec­tions,”he added.

Mean­while, Euro­pean Union said that the elec­tions to the Na­tional Assem­bly of Kuwait held on Satur­day saw a broad par­tic­i­pa­tion of po­lit­i­cal groups, re­flect­ing the full spec­trum of Kuwaiti so­ci­ety. “Cred­i­ble and in­clu­sive elec­tions rep­re­sent one im­por­tant el­e­ment of the po­lit­i­cal life in Kuwait and we re­call the unique char­ac­ter of the par­lia­men­tary sys­tem in Kuwait in the re­gional con­text,”the spokesper­son for EU High Rep­re­sen­ta­tive Fed­er­ica Mogherini said.“We re­it­er­ate the need for all po­lit­i­cal ac­tors to par­tic­i­pate con­struc­tively in the post-elec­tion process and to con­trib­ute to the fur­ther progress of Kuwaiti so­ci­ety,”the EU spokesper­son added. —KUNA
