Iraq welcomes Kuwait’s plan to hold conference

Head of the Iraq Mission to the EU and Iraqi Ambassador in Belgium Jawad Al Hindawi welcomed His Highness the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah’s readiness to host an internatio­nal conference on Iraq’s reconstruc­tion later this year. “We are very happy of this imitative. We take highly into considerat­ion this imitative by His Highness the Amir of Kuwait,” he told a press conference at the Brussels Press Club Friday. “We expect more cooperatio­n from Arab countries, especially Kuwait, in order to continue fighting the terrorist group the so-called Islamic State not only militarily but also ideologica­lly,” he said.

The Iraqi diplomat expressed conviction that the defeat of IS in Mosul is the beginning of a new phase in Iraq and the region, and appealed to the EU to intensify cooperatio­n with the central government in Baghdad to promote political, social, security and economic challenges that are facing Iraq.

Last Monday, His Highness the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad AlJaber Al-Sabah congratula­ted Iraqi President Fuad Masum and Prime Minister Haidar Al-Abadi on the liberation of the city of Mosul from the so-called Islamic State (IS). His Highness the Amir also announced that Kuwait was ready to host an internatio­nal conference on the reconstruc­tion of liberated areas in Iraq before the end of this year.

His Highness the Amir made the remark during a phone call with AlAbadi to congratula­te him on the “historic victory” on IS in Mosul. His Highness the Amir hoped the victory would boost Iraq’s unity, security and stability, and lead to the reconstruc­ting of liberated areas, and the return of refugees to their towns and villages. — KUNA
