Thiam on top in hep­tathlon

LON­DON: Olympic cham­pion Nafi Thiam soared into the lead of the hep­tathlon at the IAAF World Cham­pi­onships in Lon­don yes­ter­day. The Bel­gian univer­sity stu­dent cleared 1.95m in the high jump to end the morn­ing’s ses­sion on 2,215 points, eight ahead of Cuban Yorge­lis Ro­driguez, who im­proved her high jump best by 8cm as she matched Thiam. Dutch­woman Na­dine Visser topped times for the open­ing 100m hur­dles, Thiam chip­ping in with the 11th fastest time. Bri­tain’s Katarina John­son-Thomp­son was sixth in the hur­dles, but flopped badly in the high jump, manag­ing a best of only 1.80m, far off her per­sonal best of 1.98m. The hep­tath­letes round off later with the shot put and 200m, be­fore tack­ling the long jump, javelin and 800m to­day.
