Kuwait con­sid­ers join­ing UNODC

KUWAIT: A Kuwaiti of­fi­cial said Mon­day his coun­try was con­sid­er­ing join­ing an in­ter­na­tional agree­ment to elim­i­nate drug traf­fick­ing, com­mend­ing UN Of­fice on Drugs and Crime’s (UNODC) pro­grams that help cus­tom of­fi­cials in Kuwait com­bat drug traf­fick­ing. Ad­nan Al-Qed­heebi, Deputy Di­rec­tor Gen­eral of Cus­toms de­part­ment for land and mar­itime bor­ders, said the UN has pro­grams that could de­velop anti-nar­cotics sys­tem in Kuwait. He made the state­ment fol­low­ing a meet­ing with Hatem Ali, UNODC’s re­gional chief. Qed­heebi said Kuwait’s cus­tom de­part­ment was study­ing an agree­ment that would elim­i­nate drug traf­fick­ing, be­fore sign­ing it. Osama Al-Roumi, cus­toms de­part­ment deputy di­rec­tor gen­eral for in­spec­tion, said Ali briefed them on the UNODC’s pro­grams against drugs and crime. Ali said they dis­cussed Kuwait’s join­ing of an in­ter­na­tional pro­gram to mon­i­tor con­tain­ers. This pro­gram, he added, aimed at im­prov­ing national ca­pa­bil­i­ties for in­spec­tion of con­tain­ers. — KUNA
