Baltijas Ekspresis achieves unprecedented cargo turnover increase – 313%
Baltijas Ekspresis has achieved an unprecedented cargo turnover increase bot seen in Latvia until now. Compared with the first months of 2016, cargo turnover in Latvia had increased by 313% in the same period of 2017, as reported by Baltic Association – T
Baltijas Ekspresis has also increased its market share from 10% to 25%, taking the lead away from Baltic Transit Service and becoming the second largest transporting company in the country cargo turnover-wise. «Ventspils Commercial Port and Ventbunkers had put a lot of effort in the second half of 2016 to preserve existing and attract more cargoes to Ventspils. The main goal of Baltijas Ekspresis was mobilizing resources and transporting three times larger volumes than before. Compared to the three trains a day in October 2016, we began servicing ten and more trains a day at the end of November,» says Baltijas Ekspresis chairman Maris Bremze. The company plans to achieve cargo turnover volumes of nearly eight million tons by the end of the year. It is possible the company may even exceed this mark. This volume will be the highest in the nearly twenty years of Baltijas Ekspresis existence.
Inga Antane, president of Baltic Association – Transport and Logistics, is happy about the company’s achievements. She notes that success came as a result of long and hard work. The potential and capacity of Baltijas Ekspresis allows for even more cargo. The question is about the tariffs. This company and others that are situated in Ventspils and are part of BATL have proved their ability to attract new cargoes. However, in order to secure future development for the transit industry, it is necessary to introduce a competitive and unified tariff. Transport and logistics, including transit, is the second largest industry of state economy. The entire industry and associated businesses employ 80,000 people. This industry also provides the national economy with one billion euros annually. The 313% turnover increase achieved by Baltijas Ekspresis proves this, BATL president said.
