For time of Za­pad ex­er­cise, Wash­ing­ton to de­ploy para­troop­ers in Es­to­nia

Wash­ing­ton plans to de­ploy a com­pany of U.S. Air­borne Brigade to Es­to­nia, while Rus­sia and Be­larus will hold their joint mil­i­tary ex­er­cise Za­pad in Septem­ber.

Es­to­nian public broad­caster ERR re­ports on Tues­day, Au­gust 8, cit­ing BNS that the Es­to­nian mil­i­tary ex­pects a com­pany-sized unit of around 150 troops from the U.S Army’s 173rd Air­borne Brigade, which is based in Vi­cenza, Italy, to ar­rive in the Baltic coun­try in late Au­gust.

Za­pad (Rus­sian for «West») is a joint Rus­sian-Be­laru­sian mil­i­tary drill due to take place from Septem­ber 14 to 20. Al­legedly, at­tacks on the Baltic States and Poland have been played out dur­ing the mil­i­tary ex­er­cise in 2009 and 2013, ERR re­ports.

This week in Es­to­nia, Baltic Jun­gle, a joint cy­ber de­fence ex­er­cise of the Es­to­nian De­fence Forces and the Mary­land Army Na­tional Guard, is tak­ing place at the Ämari Air Base.
