For time of Zapad exercise, Washington to deploy paratroopers in Estonia
Washington plans to deploy a company of U.S. Airborne Brigade to Estonia, while Russia and Belarus will hold their joint military exercise Zapad in September.
Estonian public broadcaster ERR reports on Tuesday, August 8, citing BNS that the Estonian military expects a company-sized unit of around 150 troops from the U.S Army’s 173rd Airborne Brigade, which is based in Vicenza, Italy, to arrive in the Baltic country in late August.
Zapad (Russian for «West») is a joint Russian-Belarusian military drill due to take place from September 14 to 20. Allegedly, attacks on the Baltic States and Poland have been played out during the military exercise in 2009 and 2013, ERR reports.
This week in Estonia, Baltic Jungle, a joint cyber defence exercise of the Estonian Defence Forces and the Maryland Army National Guard, is taking place at the Ämari Air Base.
