Riga Air­port be­comes part of TOP 5 of Europe’s rapidly grow­ing air­ports

16.2% pas­sen­ger num­ber in­crease has al­lowed Riga In­ter­na­tional Air­port to be­come one of five most rapidly grow­ing air­ports in Europe in July. Riga air­port has en­tered the group of air­ports whose num­ber of ser­viced pas­sen­gers reaches 5 – 10 mil­lion a year, ac­cord­ing to in­for­ma­tion com­piled by Air­port Coun­cil In­ter­na­tional.

‘Riga air­port’s growth sig­nif­i­cantly ex­ceeds av­er­age in­dexes of Euro­pean air­ports, which was 9.6% in July, ac­cord­ing to data from ACI. The air­port’s in­dex also ex­ceeds its group’s av­er­age re­sults: the av­er­age growth in the num­ber of ser­viced trav­ellers was 10.2% in July for the air­port group with pas­sen­ger turnover of 5 – 10 mil­lion pas­sen­gers a year,’ notes Riga In­ter­na­tional Air­port’s chair­per­son Ilona Līce.

Air­port rep­re­sen­ta­tives say it con­tin­ued in­creas­ing the num­ber of ser­viced pas­sen­gers and trans­shipped car­goes in Au­gust. The air­port ser­viced 644,800 pas­sen­gers in Au­gust, which is 15.3% more than last year’s Au­gust. In the first eight months of 2017, when com­pared with the same pe­riod of 2016, the num­ber of ser­viced pas­sen­gers grew nearly 11%, whereas the vol­ume of car­goes grew 10%, ac­cord­ing to data about the air­port’s re­sults.

In to­tal, the air­port ser­viced more than four mil­lion pas­sen­gers in the first eight months of 2017, which is 10.9% more when com­pared with the same pe­riod of 2016.

The num­ber of tran­sit and trans­fer pas­sen­gers ser­viced at Riga air­port in the first eight months of 2017 has grown 18%, reach­ing nearly 1.2 mil­lion – nearly one third of all pas­sen­gers. airBaltic is the largest car­rier at the air­port. This air­line’s mar­ket share is 53.5% of the to­tal num­ber of pas­sen­gers ser­viced at the air­port. Ir­ish low-cost Ryanair’s mar­ket share is 15% and Hun­gar­ian low-cost air­line Wiz­zair’s share is 8.8%, the com­pany notes. Also air­port rep­re­sen­ta­tives told BNN that dou­ble-digit in­crease con­tin­ued in the cargo seg­ment – the vol­ume of car­goes han­dled by Riga air­port in Au­gust grew 12.4% in com­par­i­son with Au­gust 2016. In to­tal, Riga In­ter­na­tional Air­port trans­shipped 14,400 tonnes of car­goes in the first eight months, which is 10% more than 2016.

The num­ber of flights grew 8% – 49,012 air­craft were ser­viced in Riga in eight months.

As it is known, Riga air­port ser­vices flights to 89 des­ti­na­tions around the world dur­ing the sum­mer sea­son. 17 air­lines ser­vice flights at Riga In­ter­na­tional Air­port – airBaltic, Ryanair, Wiz­zAir, Aeroflot, SAS, Fin­nair, Nor­we­gian Air Shut­tle, Lufthansa, LOT Pol­ish Air­lines, Utair, Turk­ish Air­lines, Ukraine In­ter­na­tional Air­lines, RusLine, Uzbek­istan Air­ways, Belavia, El­li­nair and Smart­l­ynx Air­lines.
