EC: Money for Rail Baltica in next period will be negotiated
Funding of the Rail Baltica railway project after the year 2020 will be negotiated upon as part of the EU’s financial plan for the next period, has stated the European Commissioner for Mobility and Transport.
Estonian public broadcaster ERR reports that EC’s Commissioner for Mobility and Transport Violeta Bulc, on Thursday, September 22, when asked if the project could continue to expect 85 percent funding, responded: «Of course we will follow our models, especially for railways, and I hope that Rail Baltica will deliver dates and they will use all the opportunities they had at this financial period to full extent».
EU’s executive body has promised to allocate 1.2 billion euros for the 5.8 billion euro project in the 2014-2020 period and additional 110 million euros in funding were allocated to the project in summer 2017.
At present, the European Commission grants 85% funding for Rail Baltica, nonetheless the three Baltic states are concerned, if the funding will remain in the future as the UK leaves the EU and migration to southern Europe also puts a strain on EU finances.
