Es­to­nia to pre­vent dam­age to its im­age for 800 000 eu­ros

From 60 000 to 800 000 eu­ros, such is the planned in­crease of Es­to­nia govern­ment’s fund­ing on strate­gic com­mu­ni­ca­tion aimed at mon­i­tor­ing for­eign me­dia re­ports on the Baltic coun­try and on con­tain­ing pos­si­ble dam­age of the Es­to­nian im­age.

Es­to­nian pub­lic broad­caster ERR re­ports on Wed­nes­day, Jan­uary 10, that in the coun­try’s govern­ment, there is a strate­gic com­mu­ni­ca­tion depart­ment, where team of eight spe­cial­ists will ful­fil the du­ties of mon­i­tor­ing the re­port­ing on Es­to­nia in me­dia abroad. The other ob­jec­tive will be to to try to pre­vent and con­tain fake news and sim­i­lar press-based at­tacks on the coun­try.

ERR re­ported cit­ing Es­to­nian news­pa­per Pos­timees that Martin Jaško, who has been tasked with car­ry­ing out changes in the depart­ment, has noted that the depart­ment plans to be fo­cus­ing less on re­ac­tion than be­fore and move the fo­cus preven­tion and its own me­dia cam­paigns.
