Prime minister: Baltics should realize important projects together with Poland
One of the projects in which Latvia sees good cooperation opportunities with Poland is Rail Baltica. During his meeting with his Polish counterpart Mateusz Morawiecki on Friday, 9 March, Latvia’s Prime Minister Māris Kučinskis mentioned that it is important to make sure Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia work together with Poland in this project.
At the same time, he mentioned that this situation may help restore the situation when it was possible to travel to Berlin and Paris from Tallinn through Latvia, Lithuania and Poland.
It should be mentioned that energy projects were also mentioned in the context of cooperation. Kučinskis mentioned that by realizing the synchronization project it is necessary to pick a scenario that would help secure stability at the lowest costs and tariffs in a long-term perspective.
«This is why we will continue supporting synchronization of Baltic States’ power lines with continental Europe through Poland,» said the prime minister.
Officials also mentioned the need for technical and economic evaluation in order to carefully assess influence of synchronization. Baltic States’ and Poland’s transmission system operators plan to conclude the evaluation by May. The prime minister mentioned that it is equally important to continue work on formation of a regional gas market.
«By realizing those projects, we will be less threatened in situations when we are forced to disconnect from third countries,» said Kučinskis.
As for the EU multi-year budget after 2020, the prime minister mentioned that it is necessary for Latvia to resolve the matter of direct payments for farmers.
During talks, officials mentioned the importance of doing everything to make Europe strong and united.
Kučinskis said: ‘Poland is an important ally and strategic partner for Baltic States in realization of large regional infrastructure projects. Poland is also a partner for Latvia in fields like security, economics and education.’
