Three parties submit largest number of candidate lists in local government elections
According to Latvia’s Central Election Commission, the National Alliance, Harmony and Unity have submitted the largest number of candidate lists for the upcoming local government elections.
The National Alliance has put forward 62 candidates lists with a total of 952 candidates, followed by Harmony with 48 lists and 625 candidates, and Unity with 46 lists and 783 candidates.
The Latvian Farmers’ Union, one of the parties which makes up the Union of Greens and Farmers, will run with 39 lists and 631 candidates, while the Alliance of Regions will have 30 lists with 496 candidates.
The Latvian Green Party, another party which makes up the Union of Greens and Farmers, will have 25 lists with 405 candidates.
A total of 8,940 candidates from 594 tickets will run in June’s local government elections. In the local elections on June 3 this year, Latvian voters will elect municipal lawmakers in 119 constituencies - nine large cities and 110 regions. The number of local council members can be 9, 13, 15, 17 or 19 depending on the number of the local population, with the exception of the Latvian capital Riga which has 60 seats on the Riga City Council.
