Three par­ties sub­mit largest num­ber of can­di­date lists in lo­cal govern­ment elec­tions

Ac­cord­ing to Latvia’s Cen­tral Elec­tion Com­mis­sion, the Na­tional Al­liance, Har­mony and Unity have sub­mit­ted the largest num­ber of can­di­date lists for the up­com­ing lo­cal govern­ment elec­tions.

The Na­tional Al­liance has put for­ward 62 can­di­dates lists with a to­tal of 952 can­di­dates, fol­lowed by Har­mony with 48 lists and 625 can­di­dates, and Unity with 46 lists and 783 can­di­dates.

The Lat­vian Farm­ers’ Union, one of the par­ties which makes up the Union of Greens and Farm­ers, will run with 39 lists and 631 can­di­dates, while the Al­liance of Re­gions will have 30 lists with 496 can­di­dates.

The Lat­vian Green Party, an­other party which makes up the Union of Greens and Farm­ers, will have 25 lists with 405 can­di­dates.

A to­tal of 8,940 can­di­dates from 594 tick­ets will run in June’s lo­cal govern­ment elec­tions. In the lo­cal elec­tions on June 3 this year, Lat­vian vot­ers will elect mu­nic­i­pal law­mak­ers in 119 con­stituen­cies - nine large cities and 110 re­gions. The num­ber of lo­cal coun­cil mem­bers can be 9, 13, 15, 17 or 19 de­pend­ing on the num­ber of the lo­cal pop­u­la­tion, with the ex­cep­tion of the Lat­vian cap­i­tal Riga which has 60 seats on the Riga City Coun­cil.
