Panerai’s 2016 halo model is the Lo Scienziato, which is Italian for The Scientist. It’s basically a 156,500 USD skeletonised titanium Luminor 1950 Tourbillon GMT made using direct metal laser sintering, which is a cuttingedge form of 3D printing. This is the first time 3D printing has been used by a watch brand, and the company says the benefits were not just the ability to create hollowed sections and thus a lighter and stronger end-product, there was also much less wastage of materials. In essence, this watch represents a giant leap in terms of production technology.
