As a theme for an issue, ‘What the Heck’ may sound abnormally negative but rest assured we didn’t take it that way. The theme challenged us to come up with surprising and creative stories. Chief among those is our cover star, Queen Rania, who took the opportunity to shed some light on how her country, Jordan, is feeling the strains from having taken in 1.3 million Syrian refugees from Syria, (slightly less than Turkey and Lebanon, but still an astronomical number considering the small population and resources of her country) and she contrasted this with the EU, home to 500 million people and almost unlimited financial means, which has not even come close to doing its part. Along similar lines, we felt compelled to publish some of the most moving Visa Pour l’image photojournalism images from this year’s festival, which for us were the ones focussed on Mosul in Iraq. They provided a stark reminder of the human cost of all this bloodshed. On a happier note, we catch up with Richard Branson to find out exactly when Virgin Galactic plans to start taking people to space. We also meet a fascinating Moroccan-french creative called Ramdane Touhami who clearly has the Midas touch when it comes to re-launching historic luxury brands. We then drive a Tesla across continents (on a single charge), we go onboard a mad, mad boat, we track rhinos across the African bush before we pop over to Amsterdam to show you how, contrary to what you might think, it has become the perfect place for a romantic getaway. And despite such a fascinating and eclectic mix of features, one of my personal favourites is our especially cheeky Whoa! Supplement. We scoured the globe for the weird and wonderful. What we stumbled upon was fascinating and utterly WTF. In a good way, of course. Enjoy the issue and as usual don’t forget to engage with us on our various platforms to let us know what you think.
