BEIRUT’S NEW CITY CENTRE IS NO DOWNTOWN

Ekaruna - - News Round Up -

After a huge reconstruction project that cost billions of dollars, Beirut’s new city centre offers luxury apartments, posh cafes and boutiques by Burberry and Versace. However, despite this huge upgrade, there is still an element missing – the people. Even with wars coming to an end, the country still faces ongoing violence. More recently, Syria’s civil war has meant cross-border attacks into Lebanon. A former minister, who spoke to The Guardian on the condition and was not identified, said, “from an economic standpoint, it doesn’t make sense to have these skyscrapers and ultra-luxurious buildings. Beirut’s attraction is its history and its mountains and coastline.”
