In pre­vi­ous decades, fash­ion jeans were ironed and even starched to main­tain their crisp and new ap­pear­ance. In the 1980s, how­ever, dis­tressed, torn and worn-in denim was all the rage. De­sign­ers be­gan to wash denim with spe­cial ir­ri­tants to achieve a used look, and would cus­tom­ize the pair with paint­ing and small tears for ex­or­bi­tant fees. #e heavy me­tal and hard rock mu­sic move­ments of the time pop­u­lar­ized more ex­treme ver­sions of the style.
