“Jewelry with an attitude.”

Meet Maya, Meena and Zeenat Muhki – three sisters who grew up surrounded by jewelry. Descending from a family of jewelers that dates back to India in 1875, the Mukhi sisters were undoubtedly headed towards the same path. Back in the 1970’s, the girls’ grandfather Pessumal Mukhi moved to the Middle East with his brothers and their families, opening stores in Bombay Bazar, Ashoka and Rupkala in Beirut before opening more across Damascus, Cairo, Libya, Doha and Dubai. Later, Chandru Mukhi, the girls’ father, met and became engaged to Effat Kreidie while he was living in Beirut. Marrying in 1979, Effat went on to start her own company; Effy’s Jewellery. Maya is the eldest of the sisters, and tells us more about her family history. “We come from a long line of jewelers. We are half Indian and half Lebanese, and I believe our blood is mixed with the best of both worlds.” The girls spent much of their childhoods visiting trade shows with their family, and they started to make plans for a collaboration of their own. The official launch of Mukhi Sisters was set to take place in 2006, however the political unrest and the country’s instability meant the sisters had to wait another three years before they could unveil their brand. By the time the launch had come around in 2009, the Mukhi sisters had graduated university and were ready to make a name for themselves. Meena is the Sales Manager and PR contact for the brand, and explains the impact the country’s troubles have had upon her. “For now, my dream is to see my country become politically and economically stable so entrepreneurs like ourselves can grow and show others what they are capable of.” Taking inspiration from their own interests and experiences, the Mukhi sisters craft each and every piece down to the very last detail, thus creating high-end, wearable collections of jewelry that are like no other. Using gold, diamonds, precious and semi-precious stones in their designs, the sisters have successfully established a brand that conveys the passions of both the designers and the clients. Zeena is the youngest of the three sisters, and her ambitious personality is evident from the aspirations she had as a child. “I studied interior design, but being a jeweler is in my blood. Although, one of my dreams did involved me becoming a singer or entertainer.” The three different personalities of the girls are a match made in jewelry heaven, and their collections perfectly portray their creativity - with a little fun thrown in - for a more mischievous edge.
