south Africa’s Kool Out is set for a pulsating hip-hop gig at the popular 4Fordy joint this coming Sunday

Kool Out is known for hosting quality hip-hop events, and according to one of the organisers, Akio ‘DJ ID’ Kawahito, the entertainment outfit would be bringing “an authentic” hip-hop experience to Lesotho.

Kool Out was launched in 2008 in Cape Town. At the time, there was lack of quality hip-hop and platforms for artists on which to perform in the CBD (Central Business District), DJ ID told the Weekender from his base in Johannesburg.

“Most clubs did not even want us to play hip-hop so we only did on the first Wednesday of every month and within one year, made it one of the country’s most well-known hip-hop brands, expanding to both Durban and Johannesburg.

“We are old-school hip-hop heads so we believe in maintaining a certain quality and authenticity to our events. This is always reflected in everything we do.”

DJ ID further said after Kool Out’s acceptance by the public, the brand grew and started working with a number of artists, including foreign ones.

“We have worked with just about every major artist in South Africa on Kool Out events, from AKA, Khuli, to even throwback cats like Pitch Black Afro. In addition, we have had international artists such as Taleb Kweli, Ras Kass, and Blu/ Exile perform at Kool Out.

“We have hosted Kool Out in Durban, Johannesburg, Cape Town, and The Vaal.

“In terms of internationally, we held our first show earlier this year in Hamburg, Germany, which means Lesotho will be our second foreign destination.”

Dubbed Koolininthemountain, this Maseru edition will see performances from South African rappers such as Reason and Ginger Trill and locals Jiji F and T Mech. Behind the decks will be a number of both local and South African spinners such as ID, P-kuttah, Just Themba, Yanga, A-supreme, Individual Max, Instro, Ebonics & Da Star.

SABC 1’s Loot Luv will be the host of the night.

“We like to blend new school with old school while keeping it real. Basotho should turn up in numbers and expect to be served an authentic hip-hop experience. Musically, we plan to give a wide variety from soul, funk, all the way to today’s hits,” he said.
