Heartbreak for Sefotha-fotha
…as Butha-buthe Warriors seal promotion in dramatic fashion
Butha-buthe Warriors pipped Sefotha-fotha for the single automatic promotion spot in the Northern Stream in dramatic fashion on Sunday.
The Mabote-based outfit went into Sunday’s last matches of the 2015/16 a Division season top of the table and needing only a draw to be promoted to the elite league, but suffered a 2-1 defeat to Galaxy FC.
Warriors, on the other hand, beat Moholisa Stars 2-0 to secure a place to the premier league because of a better goal difference to Sefothafotha.
Warriors coach, Motlatsi thibinyana, told the Lesotho Times the team was over the moon with excitement after winning promotion to the premiership amid such drama.
“Of course, Sefotha-fotha went into Sunday’s matches as favourites for promotion, but in football, you don’t give up until the last minute. We did our part, winning our match and knew somehow, goal-difference decide who goes to the premier league.”
thibinyana attributed his young team’s win to the players’ willingness to learn.
“It is always easy, as a coach, to work with young players who are committed, disciplined and willing to learn,” said thibinyana.
“What was even more important was that everyone at the club believed in my abilities as a coach. Such faith inspired me to keep pushing the boys, and at the end, we did it in the most dramatic fashion.”
Warriors will be the third side from Butha-buthe playing in the premier league next season if Likila United manage to survive relegation. the other team is Sundawana, who have held their own this season and could still challenge for a top-four finish.
“there is so much talent in ButhaButhe and all we need to do is improve our development structures.
“But overall, the focus is now on preparing ourselves for premier league football because this is a big achievement and we need to be ready for the bigger challenge that awaits us next season.”
Meanwhile, former premier league sides Qoaling highlanders and Majantja managed to avoid relegation to the B division from the Southern Stream when they played their last matches of the season last Saturday.
highlanders beat Van Rooyen 1-0 while Majantja drew 2-2 draw against Mafeteng Stars who were relegated after the result.
