A 20-year-old Thaba-tseka woman will spend the next six months in jail after the court found her guilty of infanticide.

deputy police spokesperson lerato Motseki said Montšuoe Mokemane appeared in the Thaba-tseka Magistrate’s Court on 9 June where she was convicted and sent to jail without an option of paying a fine to gain her freedom.

“According to evidence given in court, Montšuoe Mokemane gave birth to a baby-girl on the night of 6 June and dumped her in a toilet in an attempt to conceal her birth,” Senior Inspector Motseki said.

“However, she was arrested the following day and appeared in court on 9 June. She was sentenced to six months in jail without an option of a fine.”

Senior Inspector Motseki urged women to use contraceptives to avoid unwanted pregnancies and committing crime.

“It is important for Basotho women to use contraceptive tablets, which are given freely in government hospitals. If one feels they cannot help but have unprotected sex, they must use them to avoid committing crime,” Senior Inspector Motseki said.

In another crime which occurred in the same district, a 41-year-old Manemaneng man was arrested during a joint-raid between lesotho and South African police.

The two-day operation took place from 7-8 June, during which the suspect was arrested.

“The joint-raid between lesotho and South African police officers was undertaken to recover livestock stolen from South African farmers. A total of 22 horses and four donkeys were recovered during the raid,” Senior Inspector Motseki said.

“The man was arrested after he was found with 12 horses suspected to have been stolen.”

The suspect is yet to appear in court.
