Cele’s patience finally pays off
RING of Lies star Baby Cele has been waiting for more than a decade just to get the chance to act in Isidingo on SABC3.
Cele said the chance almost happened years ago when the soapie was just starting, but it never materialised.
At last, the star who appears on the Mzansi Magic drama series joins the Isidingo cast as Colonel Sibongile Nene.
She defined her character as a fearless women and crusader for justice, who will do whatever it takes to make sure justice is served.
Nene is the police officer who has been mentioned in conversations for the past three years, and will finally be revealed on August 12.
Cele admitted the character has pushed her out of her comfort zone.
She had to dig deep, which included learning police terminology.
“I feel like I am acting for the first time, though I have been acting before,” said the actress who boasts 30 years of experience.
“When I landed the role of Ruth in Ring of Lies, I thought that was challenging, until I took on this one. I have realised this is the most challenging character in my career.”
Cele said Nene is a woman who sees her police career as the ultimate service to the public, which she would willingly trade her life for.
“She has great compassion for hard-working members of the community. She will never allow her moral integrity to be compromised.”
As much as she knows that she was born to act, Cele admitted that shooting two shows (Ring of Lies and Zabalaza) a day was hectic.
Cele’s schedule was so hectic she even developed mild depression.
“My day would start with Zabalaza, and after lunch I would be rehearsing my lines while driving to the Ring of Lies set.
“We were shooting even on Saturday. My body just could not take it.”
The actress whose career began with Sarafina!, has been able to balance her career and being a mother.
Cele married Mandla Mabuza in 2009, but they have separated.
