Eskom fires 1 000 work­ers

JO­HAN­NES­BURG — About 1 000 work­ers at the con­struc­tion site of South Africa’s Eskom Medupi power plant have been fired for van­dal­iz­ing prop­erty dur­ing this week’s one­day strike, the power util­ity’s spokesman said on Fri­day.

About 21 000 con­tract work­ers went on a one-day strike on Wed­nes­day over poor living con­di­tions and seek­ing higher pay.

“Some of the work­ers have re- ceived text mes­sages for them not to come to­day, they have been fired,” Khulu Phasiwe told Reuters, adding that they were not Eskom’s em­ploy­ees but be­longed to firms con­tracted to build the plant.

Mur­ray & Roberts ( MURJ.J) and Ac­tom, a unit of France’s Al­stom SA (ALSO.PA), are some of the com­pa­nies build­ing the coal­fired power plant.
