A Home for Entrepreneurs

Sunday Express - - ADVERTORIAL -

In the National Strategic Development Plan (NSDP), the government of Lesotho aptly recognizes that Lesotho’s growth trajectory hinges squarely on private sector led economic growth. The NSDP goes on to indicate that Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMES), offer substantial opportunities for job creation, and therefore, they must be liberated from the burdensome regulation and be seen to develop entrepreneurship, business management capacity and technical efficiency to increase their effectiveness.

This strategic direction has set the tone for Standard Lesotho Bank, being the leading and preferred financial services provider, to fully embrace and actively support this development agenda for the country, and is poised to arrest rampant unemployment and slow economic growth in Lesotho. In fact, the UNDP reports that the rate of unemployment within the economically active populations in Lesotho is around 28.7%. The situation is even more alarming where it has also been established that youth unemployment accounts for 30.5% of unemployment in the country.

With the launch of the Standard Lesotho Bank Enterprise Hub at the new Business Banking premises at Maseru Mall, that was inaugurated by the Minister of Small Business Development, Cooperatives and Marketing, Honourable Chalane Phori on 8th August 2017, Standard Lesotho Bank has embarked on a spirited drive to encourage Basotho to become entrepreneurs so that we can all join efforts to rescue Lesotho from the acute lack of employment opportunities and the ailing economy that we are currently experiencing.

Minister Phori commended and thanked the Bank for this initiative and pointed out that, “…this intervention comes at a time when businesses were beginning to doubt if the banking sector is interested in supporting their growth.” He said, the Bank has set the tone and demonstrated that it is as committed as government in ensuring that Basotho become entrepreneurs that can play a significant role in changing the fortunes of the country’s economy.

The Enterprise Hub, is a facility where Standard Lesotho Bank will educate, create, empower and develop current and aspiring entrepreneurs as part of our financial education and financial inclusion initiative.
