Football club for Swazi tournament
BEREA Ladies football club will represent the country in a four-team tournament in Swaziland on the first weekend of January 2018.
The Teyateyaneng-based Women Super League side, will face their Swazi counterparts, Manzini Wanderers, Olympafrica Ladies and Lubamba Highlanders in Manzini.
This will be the club’s second Swazi excursion after they toured for a pre-season against Black Leopards and Police Recruits.
Coach and co-owner of the team, Thabaneng Lekhooa, recently told the Sunday Express that the tournament will help prepare his charges to compete for honours in the domestic league.
“It is very good to give players exposure,” Lekhooa said, adding, “We are still a new team and such tournaments are crucial to our development”.
Berea Ladies are currently fifth with nine points on the eight team Women Super League log standings after winning three and losing six of the nine league matches they have played.
Lekhooa, who was Mehalalitoe coach at the recent COSAFA Women’s Cup in Zimbabwe, said the team had improved as they had been tail-enders in the league.
“This is our third season since the league was relaunched and we are much better than we were in the last two seasons where we were the bottom side. Now we are fifth with only a few points separating us and the fourth and third-placed sides. We have a chance of finishing in a respectable position.”
Their next domestic league fixture will be away to Mafeteng Sisters in Maputsoe. Their opponents are a point behind them on sixth position.
