Why face oils are the next best thing for a flawless complexion.

QWHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN MOISTURISATION AND HYDRATION? Hydrating products are formulated to increase water content to plump up the skin while moisturising products keep the skin soft and pliable by preventing water content in the skin from evaporating. However, both terms are used interchangeably, as most moisturisers contain hydrating ingredients and vice versa. Humectants such as hyaluronic acid, glycerin, and propylene glycol have hydrating properties that attract water molecules to the skin, whilst emollients, which are the oil-based ingredients, have moisturising effects, acting as a protective layer to prevent water loss and to trap moisture in.

QHOW DO WE LOSE MOISTURE FROM THE SKIN? We lose about 400ml of water through evaporation, and this is not including sweat. Air conditioning, heat, and wind increase this loss. Cleansing the skin too frequently will also remove the naturaltural oil and moisturising factors from our skin.

QWHAT EXACTLY ARE SKIN OILS? These are moisturisers without out water. Most do not have additives like emulsifiers, and they contain less or no preservatives. They usually have oil extracted from plants and herbs, and therefore are rich in vitamins, essential ential oils, and antioxidants. Many can be greasy and take a while to absorb into the skin while others such as Bio-Oil can absorb in a matter of minutes without hout leaving a greasy feel. This is because use Bio-Oil contains a unique ingredient ent called PurCellin Oil, which lowers the viscosity of the formulation so that it can be easily absorbed by the skin.

QHOW ARE OILS GOOD FOR THE SKIN? High-quality oils that act as emollients provide a protective layer on the top surface of the skin to prevent water loss. It also has moisturising effects.

QIN WHAT INSTANCES SHOULD ONE USE OIL RATHER THAN A CREAM? Oils are great after baths when the skin is still damp. This way, skin absorbs all the goodness oils provide as skin absorbs them quicker. We also don’t stay as oily as we would if we were to use them on dry skin. Another perfect time to use oil is before going to bed since you don’t need to worry about having an oily face or hands, or oil sticking on your clothes.

QIS IT ADVISABLE TO LAYER CREAM OVER FACE OIL? It depends on your skin type. Layering moisturisers and oils according to your skin condition may help target specific problem such as combination skin, to help

treat both dry and oily skin. Moisturisers that are water based help replenish skin hydration while oil-based moisturisers replace the natural oil stripped away during cleansing.

QHOW CAN WE TREAT SKIN ABRASIONS SO THAT THERE’S MINIMAL SCARRING? There are topical gels, creams, ointments and oils to help with scars. With its ingredients, Bio-Oil helps improve the cosmetic appearance of scarring and maintain elasticity of scar tissue on joints and other high mobility areas.
