Who better to give us an insight on nails and the colours that work than Dior’s very own International Nail Designer, Anatole Rainey.
You’ve worked with a lot of models and celebrities. Any interesting anecdotes about their nails?
Models and actresses have so many manicures done that their nails are always in tip-top condition. When I’m working with Kate Moss, we do more editorial work rather than advertisements so we do interesting designs sometimes. I personally like a chic nail but I also like playing with colours and designs like the half moon shape I recently created which was inspired by the Spring/Summer 2014 collection.
What’s your favourite colour?
That’s a difficult question. I love Nuit 1947. It’s a very dark red which suits every skin tone and it’s such an elegant shade. The perfect shade for when you go out at night. It’s like the perfect accessory.
Any tips to applying nail colour the right way?
What makes the new Dior Vernis so great is that it makes application a lot easier. The formula is much more fluid. You only need to dip the brush in once and it collects just the right amount of polish you need to cover one nail. The brush is also kind of curved on the bottom and flat so it fans out to cover the whole nail.
What would you consider colours that make nails look chic?
At the end of the day it’s all about personal taste for me. I think all the 24 colours are elegant enough to be pulled off by anybody. But I do love Greige. It’s what I personally like to call neo-nudes. They’re a new take on the tried-and-tired ‘natural ’ colours.
